A review of hypotheses on the origin of interplanetary dust is presented. It is shown that short-period comets cannot be the sole source of interplanetary dust. Two components are derived in zodiacal light: asteroidal (or ecliptic) and meteoric (or interplanetary). The asteroidal component is seen in the visible region as a zodiacal band and is caused by the dust in the asteroidal ring. The meteoric component, which is reponsible for the light diffused throughout the sky, is caused by the dust in the inner part of the solar system. These particles have the same origin as the meteoroids.
