The evolution of a twisted filament following the partial unwinding of its field is studied. It is assumed that the magnetic energy released in the unwinding process causes impulsive heating of the plasma within the filament. The heated material expands, cooling adiabatically and distorting the surrounding magnetic field lines. The temperature and density of the heated aterial are sufficient to produce observable hard X-ray emission. It is found that the hard X-ray signature of such an impulsively heated magnetic filament is a brief pulse of radiation with a simple time structure and a spectrum typical of solar bursts.
