It is found that the increments of certain hydrodynamic instabilities of a gravitating medium are greater than those of the Jeans (gravitational) instability of the medium. The hydrodynamic instabilities considered are the Kelvin-Helmholtz and flute instabilities which are modeled by a two-dimensional flow of a gravitating fluid with varying velocity and density. The key feature of the analysis is the investigation of the effect of the gravitational properties of the fluid on the stability of the plane tangential discontinuity which is formed.
