The existence of models of clusters of galaxies in general relativity is demonstrated, such that light traversing them displays to an external observer an additional redshift. On the basis of an exact solution of the Einstein equations for a spherically symmetric system, a model of a cluster of galaxies is derived which yields a redshift for galaxies behind such a cluster in agreement with the observational analyses of Karoji et al. (1975).
