Ten mercury-manganese stars from the Michigan Catalogue are examined to assess the consistency of their spectral appearance in sample groups from Galactic optical soundings. The search for classification criteria yields no clear parameters for HgMn stars, and most stars with particular rotational velocities and temperature ranges exhibit the characteristics of HgMn stars. Systematic errors in optical soundings can be avoided by obtaining samples of stars in the actual temperature range used for calibration of absolute magnitude and intrinsic colors and anticipating a significant fraction of unrevealed HgMn objects.
