This work is primarily a survey and review of recent theoretical progress in the identification and characterization of plasma boundaries in space. The specification of such boundaries is an essential step in the formulation of self-consistent Vlasov equilibria, which is (in turn) prerequisite to an analysis of the stability of plasma boundaries against small perturbations. Topics discussed include the following: magnetopause; bow shock and heliopause; interplanetary sector boundary; planetary neutral sheet; plasmapause; convection on open field lines.
