Late in the January 10-11 1997 magnetic storm interval, large solar wind density changes moved the dusk magnetotail boundary in and out over the Geotail and Interball spacecraft. These spacecraft were positioned between X=-5 and -15 Re and within a few Re of one another. The IMF was quite steady and mostly very northward during this interval, replicating conditions favorable to Kelvin Helmholtz instability in the equatorial region. Farrugia et al. (JGR 105, 7639, 2000) have studied the latter part of this interval, focusing on the Interball data and concluding that the boundary is indeed KH unstable. Here we extend this work by focusing more on the Geotail data earlier in the interval while Interball was several Re tailward and earthward. This configuration allows study of periodic boundary crossings at Geotail while Interball monitored the more earthward boundary layer. A magnetopause boundary model is shown to be quite accurate and its use helps determine density and velocity gradients normal to the boundary. Such quantities are important in determining the effectiveness of the KH instability in transporting magnetosheath particles into the magnetosphere.
