Anomalous x-ray pulsars (AXPs) and soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) are x-ray sources with unusual properties distinguishing them from both rotation-powered and most accretion-powered pulsar systems. We have studied the temporal and spectral properties of a near-complete sample of these objects using archival ASCA data in the energy range 0.5-10.0 keV. We discuss the characteristics of the spectra and lightcurves of the objects, and the implications for the various theoretical models of SGRs and AXPs.
