Appalachian State University, the Vatican Observatory, and the David Dunlap Observatory have embarked on a project of obtaining spectra, spectral types and the basic parameters for all 3600 dwarf and giant stars earlier than M0 within 40 parsecs of the sun. This project is being carried out under the Nearby Stars (NStars)/Space Interferometry Mission Preparatory Science program. We are obtaining spectra for the program stars with resolutions between 1.5 -- 4.5Å using telescopes and spectrographs of the member institutions as well as the 60cm telescope at the El Leoncito Astronomical Complex in Argentina. These spectra will be used to provide precise, homogeneous spectral types for the program stars. In addition, these spectra, in conjunction with existing photometry, will be used to determine the basic physical parameters of these stars, that is, the effective temperature, the surface gravity and the metallicity ([M/H]). The Ca 2 K--line will be used to provide a measure of the chromospheric activity of these stars. Data for this project will be released in near real--time via a website maintained at Appalachian State University. This website (http://qmc.phys.appstate.edu/), plus a sampling of the data this project will provide, will be demonstrated during the poster session. This project is funded under JPL Contract #1219099 with Appalachian State University, P.I. R.O. Gray.
