The resonance lidar capabilities at the Arecibo Observatory (18.35 N, 66.75 W) have been extended to observe in the ultraviolet part of the optical spectrum. This development allows us to measure various metallic species whose resonance lines lie in the near-UV region. Until now, we have observed the traditional alkali layers like Na using a dye laser, and K using an Alexandrite laser. With the improved system we have observed mesospheric Fe layers (using the 372 nm Fe resonance line) simultaneous with electron density measured with the incoherent scatter radar at Arecibo. Some of our recent Fe data will be presented and a comparison will be made with other measurements reported at high and mid-latitudes. Apart from our Fe observations, we also have successfully observed mesospheric calcium for the first time at Arecibo. This was done using our multi-metal resonance dye laser, which was configured for Ca at 423 nm. In addition to the UV observations, we will also present conventional Na and K measurements made at 589 nm and 770 nm, respectively, to complete the scenario and to illustrate the capabilities of Arecibo lidar systems.
