The spectral full-wave model and a 2-D chemistry model describing minor species in the mesopause region is used to model the interaction between dynamics and chemistry. Numerical simulations of the interaction of transient, dissipating gravity wave packets with the minor species involved in the OI 5577 and OH airglow chemistries in the mesopause region reveal large wave-driven downward fluxes of the minor species. In addition to the minor species fluctuating in response to the wave, a strong secular variation of minor species densities occurs. Downward transport of atomic oxygen is significant and greater than that normally attributed to eddy diffusion alone. The combined effects of the wave transport and eddy diffusion can lead to fluctuations of airglow brightness that resemble those for long period waves. This transport also has a significant effect on time-averaged chemical exothermic heating rates in the mesopause region, which can be significantly increased in the presence of the waves. These results, that demonstrate the importance of gravity wave interactions with chemical processes in the mesopause region, will be discussed.
