The field of local-area helioseismology consists of a number of related techniques: time-distance helioseismology, acoustic holography, ring diagrams, M. Woodard's wavefield correlation technique, and acoustic imaging. The goal of all of these approaches is to obtain spatially resolved estimates of flows and structure in the solar interior using observations of solar oscillations at the solar surface. In general the interpretation of local-area helioseismology data can be divided into two steps: the forward and inverse problems. I will give a review of the current state of the theory of the interpretation of local-area helioseismology data, with an emphasis on time-distance helioseismology.
