The primary objective of this program is to measure the forground interstellar absorption lines in the spectrum of Eta Carinae while it is near spectroscopic maximum. We also will be able to measure velocity variations from the star above and below in the nebulosity. This has already been accomplished on the stellar scattered light surrounding the Weigelt Blob D 0.2 arcseconds away from the central region {program 8327}.The interstellar line velocities will be compared to the interstellar line velocities measured in other Carinae cluster members to better determine the spatial relationship of Eta Carinae to the cluster. Based upon observations of Weigelt D with E230H we should be able to differentiate the nebular absorbing lines from the interstellar absorbing lines by 1} the lower energy level and by velocity changes across the spatial elements in the aperture. The nebular lines change by 5 km/s across the 0.2 arcsec aperture. The interstellar lines are constant.
