The ChaMPlane survey is conducting deep NOAO 4m Mosaic V, I, R, and Hα imaging of approximately 100 archival Chandra fields within 10 degrees of the Galactic plane, in order to study the accretion-powered X-ray source population of the Galaxy. Imaging is now complete for 24 fields, and spectroscopic followup has begun. We report results from WIYN/Hydra multi-object spectroscopy of Chandra sources and Hα -excess objects in five northern ChaMPlane fields. The selected spectrograph setup provides coverage from about 4000Å-6800Å, with 1.4Å per channel. We obtained approximately 50 object spectra in each field. We are generally able to classify objects spectroscopically down to a magnitude of approximately R=22. The classified objects include two candidate cataclysmic variables (CVs), a large number of M stars (some of which are dMe type), one elliptical galaxy, and as many as 16 quasars. The CV candidates both lie outside of the Chandra coverage and were detected from Hα excess. The quasars were almost all detected as Chandra sources. The CV candidates have magnitudes of R=20.3 and 21.6; the spectrum of the former has good signal-to-noise, while that of the latter is weaker. Both candidates show Balmer and He I lines. The brighter candidate indicates no evidence for He II λ 4686. Strong rotational splitting is seen in the brighter candidate. We discuss some trends in this early sample of ChaMPlane object identifications. This work is supported by NSF grant AST-0098683 and NASA/Chandra grant AR1-2001X.
