On the occasion of his acceptance of the Japan Academy Prize in the year 2000 awarded to his research on cataclysmic variable stars, the author summarizes his research on this topic, in particular on the outburst mechanism of dwarf novae from his personal point of view. In the first half of this article, by starting from research in the 1960s when cataclysmic variable stars were established to be special types of close binary systems, he reviews his proposal of the so-called disk instability model in 1974 from a historical perspective and then proceeds to deal with its establishment as a correct explanation for the dwarf nova outburst in the 1980s. In the second half, he tries to explain his proposal of the thermal-tidal instability model which can explain the "superoutburst" and "superhump" phenomena in SU UMa-type dwarf novae and finally tries to explain about the unification model for the cataclysmic variable stars.
