NGC 6946 is a grand design, face-on spiral galaxy that has moderate starburst activity and has hosted six supernovae within the last 100 years. Based on the star formation and historical supernova rates, NGC 6946 has been the subject of multi-wavelength surveys to identify supernova remnants. The properties of the identified remnants will be discussed as well as differences between the optically, radio, and X-ray selected samples of SNRs. Additionally, an investigation of the locations of the identified supernova remnants has led to the conclusion that the radio selected remnants probably arose from the massive star population of the spiral arms. An analysis of the impact of the supernova remnants on the formation and maintenance of the relativistic interstellar medium of NGC 6946 through the acceleration of cosmic rays will be included in the talk.
