I will start by presenting the different constituents of the Interstellar Medium of our Galaxy: ordinary matter (gas and dust), cosmic rays, and magnetic fields. I will then explain how the powerful winds and supernova explosions of the most massive stars forge the structure of the Interstellar Medium and drive a convective cycle of interstellar matter between the disk and the halo -- the so-called Galactic fountain. Finally, I will discuss the important role played by magnetic fields and, to a lesser extent, by cosmic rays in the different stages of the Galactic fountain cycle.
