NASA's JPL Digital Image Animation Laboratory has produced a video simulating a flyover of the Venusian landscape based principally upon archival data and radar images transmitted by the Magellan spacecraft. The digital video is created by stringing together a series of still images composed of a checkerboard of thousands of picture elements or pixels. The computer processes two distinct sets of Magellan's data (two bytes) for every pixel; radar brightness measurements illustrating patterns, structures, and shapes; and altitude measurements, providing the planet's elevations. The image of flying over calderas, ridges, and mountains creates for scientists a much stronger impression of the surface features in 3D.
