The technological potential and problems of solar power satellites (SPS) are reviewed. The benefits of solar power brought to one African village by NASA and AID are described. The history of the SPS project in the United States is recounted, giving the reasons for the eventual renunciation of the project. The possiblity of using lunar materials for the SPS is addressed. The prospects for a Soviet SPS are considered.
