The characteristics of SN 1987A are discussed in terms of prevailing supernova theory. The sequence of events involved in the discovery of SN 1987A is reviewed, and the ways that the observed properties of SN 1987A differed from expectation are pointed out. Possible reasons for these differences and for the appearance of a 'mystery spot' near the supernova are examined.
