An infrared excess detected by the IRAS for Beta Pictoris points towards the existence of cold solid matter surrounding this star. Photography obtained with the 2.5-m Las Campanas Observatory telescope in Chile in 1984 revealed the presence of a disk of matter around Beta Pic of about 400 AU in radius. Absorption spectroscopy measurements of Ca II and neutral Na showed the presence, along the line-of-sight, of a large quantity of gas associated with this star with a mass of about 1 percent of the mass of Jupiter. The spectroscopic observation of a variable and rapid infall of gas towards the star may provide evidence that the disk around Beta Pic gas is a protoplanetary system.
