The Vega APV-N experiment for the investigation of low-frequency plasma waves in the vicinity of Comet Halley is described. Results are presented on collective processes in the plasma responsible for the formation of fine structures in the solar wind/cometary atmosphere interaction region and for the dissipation of solar-wind energy in this region. Other aspects of the experiment were: (1) the determination of the anomalous ionization of the cometary atmosphere in the presence of the magnetized solar wind and the identification of ionization mechanisms; and (2) plasma diagnostics in the solar wind and the cometary ionosphere via measurements of characteristic boundaries in the cometary plasma shell.
