An accretion wave (AW) develops in a supersonic gas flow in a gravitational well of a density wave if the initial state of the gas corresponds to the cold phase of the ISM. The AW, with the gas being extremely compressed and cooled in it, seems to be a highly favoured place in the Galaxy for H2 to form, for giant molecular clouds to arise, and for intense star formation to operate. Strong compression also involves powerful enhancement of gamma radiation and synchrotron emission. These are just the effects observed.
