An account is given of the techniques employed by USGS cartographers in their efforts to map the surface of Mars on the basis of spacecraft-obtained photomosaics. Photogrammetrists are entrusted with the task of designating surface elevations for a waterless planet lacking a sea level that can serve as a basis for comparison; instead, the planet's center of gravity is used as the reference point for surface elevations. Artists are needed for the reconciliation of conflicts that arise among photographic plates in virtue of differences in viewing and illumination angles. The final maps are painted with careful airbrush work.
