The spatial distribution of water-group ions observed by Suisei during the encounter with comet P/Halley is discussed in terms of the ion pickup model. The observed result is most consistently interpreted when we take the water production rate of 2 × 1030 s-1. The model calculation shows the inbound-outbound asymmetry in the density of cometary ions in good agreement with the observation. It is suggested that this asymmetry is mainly caused by the difference of orbital conditions between the inbound and the outbound observations in reference to the comet.
