The fundamental scientific objectives for Mars exploration have been reexamined in the course of this study against the background of results achieved by past missions to Mars, and based in particular on the detailed scientific knowledge acquired during the last quarter of a century. Major conclusions drawn include: Options selected from a set of remote-sensing instruments would have scientific potential for any surveillance of Mars. A network of small Mars surface stations consisting of hard landers and semi-hard landers would help to fulfill the stated scientific objectives. The potential development of a sample-acquisition subsystem is considered a meaningful contribution to a very demanding and highly complex mission.
