Surface brightness profiles of 10 powerful 3C radio galaxies at moderate redshift (between 0.06 and 0.3) yield lower values of the structure parameter alpha than are typically found in first ranked Abell cluster galaxies. This difference has consequences for studies in observational cosmology that mix high-redshift radio galaxies and low-redshift Abell cluster galaxies. Comparisons with earlier qualitative work on lower-redshift radio galaxies suggest that this difference may reflect a change in environment and that it may be related to differences in the radio morphology. A possible mechanism is that the more distant radio galaxies occupy locations which produce lower merging rates of companion galaxies than are found in Abell clusters.
