Beryllium abundances will be derived for a number of G-K giants, using spectrum synthesis of the Be II lines near 3130 A. Observational data will consist of IUE long wavelength high resolution spectra, obtained both from the archives for standard giant stars, and from new observations of selected peculiar giants. In particular, we will request observing time to gather spectra of stars which have anomalously strong Li I features at 6707 A. The derived Be abundances in these stars will be correlated with other light element (Li, C, N, and O) abundances in an attempt to explain the causes of the Li anomalies. The Be abundances should enable us to rule for or against such theoretical ideas as element segregation, delayed onset of convection in giant star envelopes, and. post-main sequence Li production in highly evolved stars. In a related secondary project, we will use high resolution spectra from the IUE archives to look for Be abundance variations in F-K main sequence stars. This study will seek to define more clearly the HR diagram limits of the unevolved Bedeficient stars.
