We propose to obtain LWR spectra of two cool white dwarfs with optical calcium absorption features. The purpose is to analyze the results in terms of model atmosphere synthetic spectra to derive the elemental abundances. Our present understanding is that helium is the primary atmospheric constituent in such objects and that the heavier elements are supplied by accretion of interstellar material. The Ca/Mg ratio is then a measure of the depletion of Ca onto grains. The major puzzle in this picture is the near absence of any surface hydrogen and the wide variation of Ca/Mg and Ca/H in the four well studied cases. Observations of Mg II h and k along with Fe and other metallic features in the near ultraviolet are critical to the spectral synthesis, and these two objects will substantially increase the presently limited sample.
