The scientific objectives of this proposed observing program are to obtain ultraviolet spectrograms of bipolar and protoplanetary nebulae that are believed to toe young and possibly rapidly evolving planetary nebulae. Most of the objects on this program have never been observed by IUE, but two (HM Sge and V1016 Cyg) are known to be variable and have shown dramatic changes in their optical as well UV characteristics. Continued monitoring of these and related objects offers a rare opportunity to follow astrophysically important evolutionary patterns for a class of objects believed to be progenitors of planetary nebulae. Low dispersion spectra are needed to determine emission line fluxes, central star temperatures, and extinction parameters. If P Cygni profiles are present, they can. be used to estimate stellar winds and terminal velocities.
