Optical observations of supernova remnants in the nearby galaxies M33 and M31 have been used In conjunction with shock model calculations to determine abundance gradients for comparison with results from H II regions. However, the abundance of carbon Is an Important and unknown variable In these analyses. We wish to obtain long, collaborative exposures with IUE of several of the least reddened supernova remnants In M33 and M31 to determine the carbon abundance directly from the C III] I910 and C IV 1550 lines and to investigate the possibility of a gradient In the abundance of carbon In M33.
