We propose to obtain IUE observations of two pairs of highly variable BL Lac objects, contingent upon our obtaining time for X-ray measurements on Exosat. The IUE observations will be carried out simultaneously with Exosat X-ray observations, optical spectroscopy at Lick Observatory, 21 cm and millimeter wave observations at the Hat Creek Observatory of U.C. Berkeley and radio flux monitoring with the 5K telescope at Cambridge, England. Additional measures at other radio frequencies are being arranged elsewhere. Simultaneous observations across a wide wavelength baseline provide the most promising means of differentiating between possible mechanisms for the energy generation process and should help to determine the applicability of jet models to the BL Lac phenomenon.
