We propose to obtain IUE spectra of two sharp-lined non-magnetic chemically peculiar HgMn stars, using observational and data-reduction techniques which we have previously utilized in studying normal B and A stars with IUE. These techniques, involving the registration and coaddition of numerous images taken at various exposure levels at several different points in the large aperture, yield quantitative data in which both random and fixed pattern noise has been suppressed to a large degree and which are, therefore, suitable for detailed spectral synthesis. Previous studies of HgMn stars by several workers, while suitable as exploratory efforts, were compromised by rather poor signal-to noise in the data used. Our studies of normal stars with IUE provide a consistent framework within which to study the more exotic peculiar stars. We hope to derive abundances over a wide segment of the periodic table, to search for evidence of abundance anomalies not found in optical data, to use resonance and/or low excitation lines to re-assess abundance anomalies previously found from higher excitation optical lines, to search for evidence of atmospheric stratification or departures from LTE, and ultimately to provide some critical tests of the diffusion model for the production of the anomalous abundances.
