While the correlation between the far infrared (FIR) and radio emission of starforming (SF) galaxies is well-supported observationally, a detailed understanding of this relationship remains elusive. The "calorimeter" model of the FIR-radio correlation requires that relativistic electrons in SF galaxies cool completely before they exit the galactic disk. Thompson et al. (2006) show that breaks in the radio spectra of SF galaxies at GHz frequencies can be used to diagnose whether this condition, in fact, holds.
We present Allen Telescope Array (ATA) observations of the starburst galaxies NGC 253 and M82 and the extreme starburst galaxy Arp 220. The continuous frequency capability of the ATA enables the construction of spectra with dense sampling at frequencies between 0.5 and 7 GHz. Repeated measurements indicate a typical precision in flux density of better than 10% in an individual scan. Our data allow measurement of variations in the spectral index across the range of frequencies observed.
The techniques for obtaining continuous spectra demonstrated herein also have valuable applications to the study of many other targets, including compact symmetric objects, gigahertz-peaked sources, and intra-day variables. The lessons learned from their implementation on the ATA have ramifications for future centimeter-wavelength observatories with continuous frequency coverage such as the Extended Very Large Array and the Square Kilometer Array.
