Values are obtained for the concentration of free oxygen in the earth atmosphere, and values for the different concentrations of O2 from abiotic and biotic sources are compared. Data for the photo-dissociation of water vapor by solar UV radiation and estimates of the daily hydrogen dissipation rate are used to calculate the amount of time necessary for the accumulation of present O2 concentrations. Some of the parameters which characterize the equilibrium level of free oxyen are determined. It is found that in the absence of photosynthesis the level of free oxygen in the Precambrian atmosphere could vary from one to five percent.
