The IUE observations of Type 1 supernova SN 1983 n in NGC 5236 are discussed. The data suggest that spiral galaxies contain a sub-class of Type 1 SNe which does not exist in early type galaxies. Stellar progenitor of SN 1983 n was originally a rather massive star. Since in elliptical and SO galaxies massive stars are very rare while they are relatively numerous in spirals, low luminosity extension of the Type 1 SN distribution found in spiral galaxies is real and is accounted for by the end products of the evolution of relatively massive binary systems in which, however, neither of the components was massive enough to explode as a Type 2 SN.
