Investigation of the chemical composition and physical condition of interstellar gas and dust in our Galaxy, and in external systems, has continued to be pursued vigorously, making use of much new data from the IUE satellite. This review sets out to describe some of the advances that have been made over the last few years in several research areas, including the local interstellar environment, the dust, and the distribution of gas away from the plane of our Galaxy.
