The 6707 A doublet of lithium is found to be unusually strong in several red giant stars in the old galactic cluster NGC 7789. In some stars, the lithium abundance is near the cosmic value. The presence of enhanced lithium in a cluster with a well-defined color-magnitude diagram provides specific information on the behavior of lithium in low-mass, evolved stars. At luminosities just above the core helium-burning clump, lithium is enhanced to almost the cosmic abundance. The lithium line strength declines along the upper giant branch, suggesting that lithium is rapidly depleted during this phase of stellar evolution.
