The underlying assumption of the Pristane Formation Index (PFI)--that the sum of pristane and pristene is independent of formation temperature at constant precursor conversion--is found to be true for pyrolysis of several petroleum source rocks over a wide range of pressures and temperatures. It is also shown that it is possible to derive Arrhenius rate parameters involving activation energy distributions that are consistent with both geological and laboratory reactions.
