A significant fraction of flat spectrum quasars and BL Lac objects exhibit rapid variability both in total intensity as well as polarization at cm wavelengths, on time scales ranging from a few hrs. to a few days, a phenomenon termed Intra-Day Variability (IDV). The physical process responsible for this behavior is not well understood, though various models ranging from source-intrinsic (e.g. shock-in-jet) to source-extrinsic (e.g. scintillation due to electron density fluctuations in ISM) have been invoked to explain the same. Absence of multi-epoch, multi-wavelength data (especially in the 2cm range) exacerbates the situation. For the first time, a large set of 15GHz, full polarization, multi-epoch VLBA data obtained as part of the MOJAVE campaign, was analyzed to study the IDV properties of flat spectrum sources.
About 50% of the 200 sources studied were found to exhibit IDV, a majority of them being only intermittent IDV sources. The IDV properties of BL Lac objects were found to be similar to those of QSOs. Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) and Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) sources on the other-hand stand out due to their remarkably stable flux densities. As a result, the current analysis has been able to correctly identify a few sources misidentified as flat spectrum sources in the literature. With the exception of the HPRQ 4C 29.45 (1156+295, z=0.729), no new rapid IDV sources were found. Hints of 'seasonal IDV' were found in 1156+295, while a possible correlation between new jet component ejection and IDV amplitude was found in a few other sources.
The MOJAVE project is supported under the National Science Foundation grant 0406923-AST.
