The aperture size necessary to optimise the signal to noise ratio for observations of faint galaxies is calculated in terms of the galaxies' scale sizes. Angular sizes are calculated for characteristic cases. It is found that the optimum is attainable from the ground for faint spirals, but that the Space Telescope should be able to observe ellipticals more than a magnitude fainter than an identical ground based system.
