The infrared cluster near the NGC 2071 reflection nebula in the Orion B cloud is one of the closest clusters known to harbor embedded high-mass stars and is undergoing massive star formation. We present first results of a Chandra ACIS-I observation of the NGC 2071 IR cluster. The aims were to utilize Chandra's higher angular resolution to confirm a previous XMM-Newton detection of the embedded high-mass star IRS 1 and to identify other X-ray emitting young stellar objects (YSOs) in the crowded cluster core. We confirm the earlier X-ray detection of IRS 1 and compare Chandra results with XMM-Newton. We also report the first X-ray detection of VLA 1, a deeply embedded YSO lying 2 arc-seconds from IRS 1 that was previously unresolved by XMM. IRS 1 may have a surrounding disk and is believed to drive a powerful bipolar outflow. The Chandra X-ray spectrum of IRS 1 is heavily absorbed and VLA 1 is even more so. The infrared source IRS 3 exhibits an unusually hard X-ray spectrum. In addition to known IR sources, we detect approximately 200 X-ray sources near or in the cluster. About 40% of these sources have either a near-IR or optical counterpart, and about 40% are also variable, including VLA 1. Spitzer observations with IRAC and MIPS have detected many of the Chandra X-ray sources.
