After presenting a development history of the study of molecular clouds, attention is given to the current theories of molecular cloud structure and their predictions are critically compared with actual statistical properties of clouds. The clumpy, inhomogeneous nature of molecular clouds has consequences for attempts to determine their density and mass distribution. Approaches to the determination of molecular cloud masses and local densities are accordingly assessed, and observations are presented from a sample of individual sources, emphasizing the results obtained by high-resolution studies of star formation.
