TeV gamma-ray signals from cosmic sources are small compared with cosmic ray background. Two signatures of a source are an excess number of events from the direction of the source and the existence of a characteristic periodicity in the arrival times of events from the direction of the source. For episodes of apparent emission where both signatures have been observed, it is possible to make improved estimates of the probability that the signal is spurious, of the size of the signal, and to apply a consistency test between the amplitude of the periodicity and the observed excess number of events. Analytical expressions for noise-origin probability, signal strength, and consistency are derived from the chi-square distribution in the limit that background is the dominant source of statistical fluctuations. These are compared with Monte Carlo simulations and applied to an observed episode of TeV emission from Hercules X-1, and to a search for TeV pulsar emission from Cygnus X-3.
