A method is proposed which makes it possible to determine the contribution of a given dust material to interstellar extinction. The method is based on the relation existing between the real and imaginary parts of the complex refractive index of the dust material and is concerned only with grains whose size is small in comparison with the wavelength. The approach can also be used to propose materials responsible for a given observed interstellar feature. Results of tests on some interstellar materials, such as graphite, various types of carbon, silicate, and organic materials, are presented.
