High S/N observations of CO (J=1-0) are presented for eleven evolved stars with different characteristics. The CO lines from slightly reddened Mira variables are weak, but do not display two prominent peaks. The profiles and thermal SiO lines are fitted using a line formation model. The mass loss rates are larger than expected, especially for very reddened Mira variables and semiregulars. It is found that the extension of the CO envelope is relatively small and depends on the mass loss rates. The extensions vary from 2 x 10 to the 16th cm in thin envelopes to 2 x 10 to the 17th cm for IK Tau.
