The matrix formulation of the transformation of position vectors and velocities, from the system of FK4 at B1950.0 to that of FK5 at J2000.0, is examined. The formulation by Aoki et al. (1983) involving, an 'osculating' epoch at 1984 January 1, is found to be erroneous, whereas that proposed by Standish (1982) is essentially correct. The direction cosines of the principal galactic axes in the new system at J2000.0 are given.
