New J, H, K photometry of 26 compact southern planetary nebulae is
presented. Fourteen objects are sources that were classified as S-type
by Persi et al. (1987), while 12 objects are observed for the first
time. The new near-IR observations suggest that approximately 2/3 of the
sources previously classified as S-type are in effect N-type sources.
