A review of the fundamental features of electromagnetic waves propagating in free space are reviewed as well as some of the basic concepts about waves, necessary for the study of wave phenomena in plasmas. The solution of the wave equation, satisfied by the electric and magnetic field vectors, in terms of plane waves is presented along with the characteristics of harmonic waves. The concepts of wave polarization, energy flow, wave packets and group velocity are also examined.
