Asteroids are irregular bodies that are shown to be rotating by the variation in the reflected solar illumination as they rotate. Since they are irregular, the character of their rotational motion is described by specifying the time dependence of the components of their angular velocities along the eigenvectors of their nondegenerate inertia tensors. The results presented are the computation of (1) the time scale for the decay of the residual energy, (2) the rate of the residual energy excitation, and (3) the equilibrium value of the residual energy as function of the asteroid's physical and dynamic parameters and an adopted field asteroid mass and velocity distribution. The amount of nutation is interpreted in terms of its impact on the light curves of the asteroids, which are assumed to be triaxial ellipsoids.
